Terms of Reference for Intern - Right to Participation Unit

I. Position Information  
Intern, OHCHR Right to Participation Unit
Supervisor: Claudia de la Fuente, Head of the Right to Participation Unit
Duration of internship: 3 months initially (possible renewal of another 3 months).

II. Background  
The mission of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is to work for the protection of all human rights for all people by helping to empower them as well as assisting those responsible for upholding their rights. In the Cambodia Country Office, OHCHR implements five core programmes in line with its mandate of protection and promotion of human rights. These are: Rule of Law, Economic and Social Rights, Prison Reform Support, Civil Society and Fundamental Freedoms and Right to Participation.
The Right to Participation Unit works to monitor and promote the right to participation in the conduct of public affairs and political rights and the promotion of young people’s participation.
The Right to Participation Unit requires a Khmer and English speaking intern with a legal or human rights background to help with the preparation of trainings, information-gathering and media monitoring related to exercising political rights, the right to participate in the conduct of public affairs and youth-related human rights.

III. Duties and Responsibilities  
The intern will provide support to the Right to Participation Unit in the monitoring of political rights and right to participate in the conduct of public affairs, as well as in the preparation of trainings and meetings carried out by the unit, including the youth human rights competition, by:
  1. Assisting in collecting information related to the exercise of the right to participation;
  2. Assisting in preparing trainings or meetings (cf. preparation of training materials, logistics and procurement requests; preparation of minutes of the meetings);
  3. Assisting in the preparation of and participation in field/monitoring missions;
  4. Taking notes during meetings;
  5. Other related tasks.
 IV. Desired qualifications of the intern:  
  1. Pursuing a Bachelor degree (in the last academic year) or Master’s degree in law or related field;
  2. Knowledge of human rights law, youth, civic and political participation in Cambodia;
  3. Very good Khmer and English writing skills;;
  4. Demonstrated interest in and commitment to human rights;
  5. Ability to work in a team;
  6. Good research and drafting skills;
  7. Willingness to learn new things.

1. You must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or
equivalent, or higher);
(b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree
programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
(c) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in 1 (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
