01 September 2008 - Ms. Navanethem Pillay assumes her position as the new United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights today at OHCHR's headquarters in Geneva. Ms. Pillay, who comes from South Africa, was previously a judge at the International Criminal Court in the Hague. She assumes the post previously held by Ms. Louise Arbour, whose four-year term as High Commissioner ended in July. Ms. Pillay is the fifth person to hold the post of High Commissioner for Human Rights which was created in 1993. A warm welcome to the High Commissioner from her staff at the Cambodia Country Office.
