GENEVA (14 September 2016) – The two advance reports on Cambodia presented at the 33rd session of the UN Human Rights Council are now available on our website (English only). The report of the Secretary-General outlines the work of the OHCHR-Cambodia office in continuing to protect human rights, guard and monitor civil society activities, strengthen the rule of law, and promote economic and social rights, despite a particularly tense political climate. The report of the Special Rapporteur outlines Professor Rhona Smith’s findings during her last mission to Cambodia, which focused primarily on indigenous people and women’s rights. While it outlined government officials’ willingness to discuss and work with her on issues of importance, as well as positive developments made in the areas of multilingual and girls’ education, the report noted that such developments are “overshadowed by the prevailing political situation characterized by the increasing number of arrests and cases of detention of civil society actors and members of the largest opposition party.” The two reports present developments during the year up to 30 June 2016.
