15 February 2008 - The Geneva-based committee charged with monitoring implementation of the International Convenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights has asked the Royal Government of Cambodia to submit its long-overdue report by 1 August 2008 and has said it will consider Cambodia's record at its session in May 2009 regardless of whether the report is submitted. Cambodia became a party to the Covenant in 1992 and should have reported in 1994, 1999, and 2004. Meanwhile, the Human Rights Council has schedualed Cambodia for consideration under its new Universal Periodic Review mechanism also in 2009 on a date yet to be fixed.
