01 October 2007 - Cambodia has become the 116th country to sign the new Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which was approved by the General Assembly at the end of last year. Signing is the first step on the way to full ratification which it is hoped will follow soon. The Government has stated its hope to be amongst the first twenty States parties to the Convention; currently seven countries have ratified. A law on the rights of disabled persons has been under consideration by the Government for several years. The Government has also signed the Optional Protocol to the Convention.
