GENEVA (27 October 2016) – Expressing deep concern on the cases of 15 MPs from the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) that "continue to face serious violations of their fundamental rights and are therefore being prevented from effectively playing their role as parliamentarians and members of the opposition freely without fear of persecution,” the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) "noted with consternation that no progress has been made in resolving the cases and that the situation has further escalated." It decided to continue to examine these cases, which include those against Ms. Mu Sochua, Mr. Sok Hour Hong, and Mr. Sam Rainsy. In its decision, the IPU noted that its Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians considered the information presented by both the Government and other relevant parties. The IPU urged “the Cambodian authorities to ensure full respect for human rights and that the law is applied without discrimination.” It also noted that “it is critical for the ruling party and the opposition to resume the political dialogue towards building a stable political environment in which there is sufficient space for dissent and for the peaceful exercise of the freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly.” Read the full decision in English and Khmer
