13 November 2014 – Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), together with the Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia, conducted the first part of its Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) legal dialogue series on 'Case Management and Evidence Gathering'. The event was held at the Bar Association's headquarters in Phnom Penh. Lawyers working for the defence and civil parties at the ECCC led these discussions and explained how the case management systems at the Court could be relevant and applied to their domestic practice. Civil party lawyers further noted novel claims that could be made utilizing the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code, bearing in mind the knowledge gained from the civil party process at the ECCC.

OHCHR's Representative, Ms. Wan-Hea Lee welcomed the group of sixty lawyers to the dialogue, noting the importance case management practices played to ensuring the effectiveness of Cambodia's justice system, as well as to ensuring the right to a fair trial, in particular to a trial without undue delay and to ensuring the proper and efficient gathering of evidence. H.E. Bunn Honn, President of the Bar Association, noted the importance of ensuring the transfer of such skills to the domestic justice sector from the ECCC, and the benefits of these discussions for lawyers.
