Promoting the legacy of the ECCC18 December 2013 – The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Cambodia organized a ECCC Legacy Update Meeting to share updates on the progress of various projects (underway or planned) related to the legacies of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). The meeting were opened by Mr. Thun Saray, president of ADHOC and Ms. Marie-Dominique Parent, Deputy Representative of OHCHR in Cambodia. A range of stakeholders participated, including ECCC officials, judicial officers and lawyers, representatives of the Bar Association, judges and prosecutors from the Court of Appeal, NGO representatives and diplomats. In the morning, the discussions were focused on the ECCC Legacy projects implemented by various organisations. In the afternoon, participants discussed the draft Annotated Code of Criminal Procedure. In order to promote the jurisprudential legacy of the ECCC, parts of the Cambodian Code of Criminal Procedure have been annotated by several legal teams from around the world using ECCC jurisprudence. All participants welcomed the project and recommended its early publication. In her closing remarks, Ms. Marie-Dominique Parent recalled that ECCC legacy activities are largely developed and implemented with the aim to ensure the promotion of a culture of rule of law and human rights in Cambodia, using the ECCC as an example of best practice.
