PHNOM PENH (11 July 2016) – The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Cambodia is saddened and shocked at the killing of Cambodian political commentator Dr. Kem Ley yesterday. We offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Dr. Kem Ley was a prominent figure in Cambodia’s social and political scene, whose engagement, independent voice and analyses were closely followed by many. OHCHR notes the Royal Government’s call for a thorough investigation into the crime and the many questions that this investigation will have to answer. It is of utmost importance that those responsible be brought to justice and no perpetrator remain unpunished. OHCHR calls for effective protection measures for prominent political and social figures and commentators, to safeguard against the repetition of such a tragic crime.
