23 February 2009 - The Sub-Committee on Prevention of Torture (SPT), based in Geneva, has informed the Government of its intention to visit Cambodia later this year in accordance with the terms of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT) which the Government ratified in 2007. The Optional Protocol requires the authorities to give the SPT full access to places of detention in the country during periodic visits. The Government is also bound to create an independent national preventive body to work in parallel with the SPT. The precise dates of the visit will be decided at a later date.
